The surprising outcome of the 2011 AFC Divisional Playoffs between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets launched a shock wave around the world. Who could’ve imagined that the New England Patriots were going to be de-throned by their divisional rival New York Jets. The game on Sunday afternoon – 1/16 showed exactly why the NFL playoffs can never be taken for granted no matter the seed.
Most sports enthusiasts and analysts counted the NY Jets out before even playing one snap. The outcome of this game enabled everyone to realize that no matter the stakes, anything is possible and nothing is EVER impossible. Throughout the week leading up to the divisional matchup, there was a lot of trash talking between both teams. The New York Jets throughout the whole season have been scrutinized time and time again for their bravado. It was time for the Jets to walk the walk and set aside the talk. During the same time, the New England Patriots also spoke to media and decided to join the trash party. The Patriots wideout, Wes Welker, elected to poke fun at Rex Ryan regarding the famous internet video of Rex and his wife having fun with each others feet. This act by Welker inspired the NY Jets and rallied the team to the highest point. This created a buzz for the divisional matchup between the Patriots and the Jets. This rivalry is now “personal”.
As most of you know, the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots with the score 28-21. Gang green has finally beat Tom Brady in Foxboro. More important, the Jets move on to the AFC Championship to play the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was a great season for the New England Patriots and many believed that this team would represent the AFC in the 2011 Super Bowl. As a sports fan, it’s exciting to know that there will be many more heated games between these two teams in the future. As we look forward to those games, let’s first congratulate the New York Jets for they were the better team on the night of January 16, 2011.
