On the night of April 16, 2011, a ferocious, determined, and possessed young boxer emerged as one of the new young stars to represent the sport of boxing. “Vicious” Victor Ortiz dictated the fight against undefeated Welterweight champion Andre Berto. The first 7 rounds between the two fighters were exhilarating. Both boxers went toe to toe unloading power shots to the head and body. A total of 4 knockdowns between both fighters occurred. As the rounds went on, Victor Ortiz seemed to be the more dominant fighter and slowly, but surely took over the fight. Andre Berto seemed faster than Victor Ortiz, however couldn’t maneuver to deliver the game-changing blow. Instead, Berto found himself on the ropes for most of the fight fighting to survive rather than fighting for the victory.

The fight between Ortiz and Berto showed the world that both boxers were ultimate warriors. Victor Ortiz however was just the stronger, more determined fighter. Ortiz consistently threw punches throughout the fight and ultimately found Berto’s weak point, the body. It was clear that the fight was slowly turning to Victor Ortiz’s favor once he opened up inside. There were a couple of rounds where Andre Berto was seen wobbling almost as if his legs were going to shatter. Berto tried to clamp on to Ortiz whenever there were a barrage of punches coming his way. It didn’t stop Victor Ortiz from sticking to his game plan and punishing the undefeated Welterweight champion.

As the night came to an end at the MGM-Foxwoods Arena, “Vicious” Victor Ortiz shocked the boxing world by upsetting Andre Berto and becoming the new Welterweight champion. With this fight, Ortiz automatically inserted himself as one of the definite contenders in the Pacquiao and Mayweather sweepstakes. People now know who Victor Ortiz is and looking forward to seeing more of this young dynamic fighter in the future. Was this fight a fluke? Will this young dynamite be the next Oscar De La Hoya? The hype for “Vicious” Victor Ortiz starts now.
