According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake was arrested Monday afternoon for stealing T-shirts at Macy’s. Yes! If you felt that you might’ve read incorrectly, you are not mistaken. Starting pitcher Mike Leake, who plays for the Cincinnati Reds and makes approximately $425,000, had been caught ripping the security tags off T-shirts and quickly walking out the Macy’s store. The T-shirts were reported to be worth no more than $60.00.
23-year-old Mike Leake was set to start Monday night for the Cincinnati Reds against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-hander is currently 2-0 with a 5.50 ERA in three starts this season. Due to the incident, Leake will not be pitching in tonight’s game. Instead, Travis Wood will be the starting pitcher for the Reds.
A statement was issued on behalf of Mike Leake stating the below:
“Today, Mike Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft from the Macy’s store downtown. Right now, he has been advised by his attorney to offer no further statements on this matter. This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike’s story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded. However, Mike wishes to apologize to his family, the fans, Mr. Castellini, Walt, Dusty, his teammates and the entire Reds organization for this distraction.
No one knows what prompted Mike Leake to steal the T-Shirts. We all remember Winona Ryder getting arrested for stealing at Saks Fifth Avenue. Now, it is Mike Leake caught stealing at Macy’s. Just when you think these popular stars and athletes have everything in the world, somehow these individuals still end up negatively hurting their own reputations.
Macy’s currently advertises via slogan “Buy More. Save More”. Mike Leake apparently did not receive the memo and chose to instead, get it all for free.
