Two weeks into the start of the 2009-10 NBA season, The Miami Heat played host to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was the time when LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were both considered the primary superstars for their corresponding teams. With friendship set aside, James and Wade always played hard against each other and you always knew something ridiculous was going to happen.

On the night of November 12, 2009, The Miami Heat squared off with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Most of us do not even remember this game, but die-hard fans will never forget when Dwyane Wade executed, beyond question, one of the best facials in NBA history.

The play occurred in the first quarter with the Cleveland Cavaliers leading the Miami Heat with the score of 19-18. An inbound pass was given to Lebron James at the top of the key. James then tried to score by driving to the lane, however was blocked by Jermaine O’Neal, who was at the time playing for the Miami Heat.

As the ball was blocked, Dwyane Wade gathered the loose ball. Wade pushed the tempo and dribbled the ball to the Cavaliers’ defensive end of the court.

As Dwyane Wade proceeded to survey the court for open teammates, the center of the lane was open. “Flash” as they mostly call him, Wade instinctively drove down the center of the basket with only one Cavalier defender to beat.

The Cavalier center, Anderson Varejao had no choice, but to rise above and try to block the shot. Dwyane Wade drove down the center of the lane with no remorse and punished the Cavalier defender by dunking over Anderson Varejao.

The force behind Wade’s dunk was so powerful, that it sent the Cavalier center to the floor sending his body out of bounds with the poor guy’s heels over his head. Literally!

It was a painful moment for the Cavalier big man, but D-Wade’s statement to the league was clear, “Lay down or get out of the way!”
