“Wait a minute, repeat that again?” These were the first words that came out of my mouth right after I had seen coach Bennett’s press conference.
As I began to listen to the interview, I must’ve heard the word “cat” like fifteen times and I had no idea how any of this information pertained to football. I was literally confused.
As coach Bennett proceeded to explain his point, it was evident… I was lost. By the time coach Bennett mentioned how his screen door was broken and how the cat entered his house, but couldn’t get out, I was ready to close the video.
But something happened. It was so hilarious, it made me want to watch the video a bit longer.
Cat starts goin’ “MEEOOOW!” All crazy! Coach David Bennett said. And I told our players… we need more dogs. Bo’s barkin’ in the back [I assume this to be the coach’s dog], I have to go shut Bo up, Mel’s like, “What’s going on?!” I say, “There’s a cat in the house.” “Cat in the house?!” I said, “Yeah, there’s a cat in the house”.
Ok, there’s a CAT in the house, so what? I don’t know about you guys but If I were one of his players, I would be planning and requesting a transfer ASAP!
Coach Bennett finished his story by stating:
“So I told our players, I tried to let it out the front door – “MEEEOOOW!” – the cat’s still goin’ crazy in there. And I told our players: You need to be more like a dog! We don’t need a bunch of cats in here – meow! – looking’ in the mirror. “I look gooood, I got my extra bands on, I got my other shoes.” Be a dog! We don’t need no meows, we don’t need no cats. We need more dogs.”
Believe it or not, the story was supposed to be a lecture to his players. The lesson to be learned here was to play not like a cat and be flashy [I never knew cats were that flashy to begin with], and play more like dogs. Play with passion and treat the game with respect. At least, I think that’s what he meant.
Coach Bennett’s speech was meant to elevate the team’s focus for their upcoming game against Catawba College. Just when I thought I’ve seen it all, sports always have a way of surprising you.
What a speech.
