In the 2007-08 NBA season, Kobe Bryant was named the Most Valuable Player in the league. Bryant played a total of 82 games that year posting 28.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. The Los Angeles Lakers, led by Kobe Bryant, went to the playoffs, but had lost to Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.
According to the Washington Post, while visiting some students at the University of California-Santa Barbara, Bryant was asked about his MVP season. Not only did it take Kobe Bryant to the past, it also gave the future Hall of Famer a chance to reminisce how frustrating it was to play with Kwame Brown (Wizards #1 Pick that was dealt to the Lakers in exchange for Caron Butler).
“It was tough doing that that year,” Bryant said. I was playing with guys, God Bless them… God Bless them.”
Kobe Bryant continued by speaking about Kwame Brown’s last game wearing a Lakers’ uniform. (If this was true, God Bless Kobe Bryant!)
“The game before we traded for Pau (Lakers C Paul Gasol), we’re playing Detroit. I had 40 points and it was late in the game. Kwame was under the basket all by himself and I pass him the ball, bobbles it and goes out of bounds.”
The Lakers took a timeout and Bryant and Kwame Brown had a little conversation. Now, this was funny. A definite must read!
Kwame Brown: Hey, um… I was wide open.
Kobe Bryant: Uh, yea I know.
Kobe Bryant: Your open, Rasheed (Rasheed Wallace) is totally ignoring you.
Kwame Brown: Well, I’m open but don’t throw it to me. (Are you kidding me?)
Kobe Bryant: Huh????
Kwame Brown: No, don’t throw it to me!
Kobe Bryant: Why not?
Kwame Brown: Well, I’m nervous and if I catch it and they foul me, I won’t make the free throw. (I am sorry, but that’s hilarious!)
Kobe Bryant to Phil Jackson: (Lakers coach): Take him out of the game!
Phil Jackson: Phil thinks it through… “No, let him figure it out.” (Classic!)
Where is Kwame Brown now? The center played last season for the Charlotte Bobcats where he averaged 7.9 points per game, 6.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists.
