Tim Howard On Scoring A 100-Yard Goal: It’s Not A Nice Feeling For A Keeper

After scoring an unbelievable 100-yard goal against Bolton (English Premier League), Everton goalkeeper, Tim Howard, who also plays for the United States national team, seemed a bit distraught.

Why would a soccer player be exceedingly sad about scoring a goal, in particular, a goalie? Goals are always meant for celebrations, but in Tim Howard’s case, it was a situation that could’ve been very much avoided.

Confused? Hey, don’t ask me. Let’s ask Tim Howard for an explanation. According to Sky Sports via Yahoo.com, Tim mentioned his deep sympathy to the opposing Bolton goalie, Adam Bogdan.

“I was delighted that we were in the lead and would hopefully go on to get three points, but it’s not a nice feeling for a keeper. It’s really awful actually,” Howard told Sky Sports.

“For the back four and the goalkeepers at both ends, there was an awful wind swirling. You could see everybody was mistiming balls. Defenders were missing clearances that normally they would put up the field. I think the wind is the hardest condition to play in. Snow, rain, sun doesn’t matter, but the wind really does play tricks on you.”

Now does it make sense? It’s difficult to find athletes with Tim Howard’s professionalism nowadays. We watch sports all the time and it’s getting to the point where it feels like all we see now is greed, the “all about me” attitude, and that money overpowers the notion of winning. I don’t know about you guys, but Tim Howard certainly was a nice breath of fresh air.

Sometimes, real winners win regardless of any situation. The opposing team Bolton actually ended up winning the game against Tim Howard and Everton with the score of 2-1. Everton might’ve lost the game at home, but Tim Howard certainly represented the organization well.

  1. I guess that’s another thing about soccer etiquette that we don’t understand.

And with US Soccer’s recent offensive woes, we need all the scoring we can get, he he.

With Landon Donovan back for Everton, there should be some offensive stability. Thanks for the comment.

  2. I loved this goal and never get tired of seeing it. Howard is an excellent netminder and regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, anything that can turn the spotlight on him is a good thing.

I loved it too… Seriously, it was the first time I’ve seen a goal hit this way and it was great! Of course, the wind had a lot to do with it, but who cares. hehe
