Today, veteran safety Brian Dawkins finally convinced himself that it was over. After finishing the last year of his contract with the Denver Broncos, the “Wolverine” as many called him for his energetic and passionate level of play had contacted Denver coach John Fox to inform management of his retirement.
After 16 years of playing NFL football, Brian Dawkins played his heart out for two franchises [The Philadelphia Eagles and the Denver Broncos]. The second round draft pick in the 1996 NFL Draft became a nine-time Pro Bowler and established himself as one of the more respected core leaders in the National Football League.
When you think of Brian Dawkins, true defensive leaders come to mind, such as Ray Lewis, Michael Strahan, and Deion Sanders. It doesn’t take a lot of words from one of these guys to let you know that it’s now or never. Brian Dawkins, 38, was one of those warriors who sacrificed his well being on the field simply for the love of the game.
After suffering from a serious neck injury last year, which sidelined Dawkins for the entire NFL playoffs, the veteran free-safety decided to leave the game he adored in order to avoid any further injuries.
Via Twitter, Brian Dawkins also thanked everyone who helped pave the way for his longstanding career.
“The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing in me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that I have enjoyed tremendously. In other words, I am announcing my retirement from the NFL.”
The Denver Broncos weren’t expecting Brian Dawkins to return to the team this coming year. It seemed that the wily veteran no longer had the appetite for another negotiation. Putting everything into perspective, the unrestricted free agent decided to hang up the cleats forever.
It was a great run while it lasted.

Great player. True warrior. Glad he’s leaving on his own terms. All the best to Brian Dawkins.
We feel the same. Better that than another neck injury.
Brian Dawkins is a great player, great leader, great teammate, and a great man. He will be truly missed by the NFL family.
Brian Dawkins is one of those guys that could make your blood level skyrocket just with his words. Definitely one of the great leaders we had in the NFL.

Dawkins is Canton bound for sure .. and sure fire first time ballot Hall of Famer !
Saints’ GM Mickey Loomis …….. how much of a moron is this guy ? He’s now saying that his reputation is being besmirched? In what world is he now living in?
tophatal …………..
I would love to see Brian Dawkins inducted into the Hall of Fame, not for his statistics alone, but based on the impact he had on the game. In terms of GM Mickey Loomis, the Saints just can’t seem to get a break. John Barr of “Outside the Lines” who first reported the eavesdropping story stated they were trying to find different angles to the Saints’ bounty program and while doing so, they uncovered this scandal. It goes to show you… you look hard enough and you’ll find what you’re searching for.
