Every year, HBO features an NFL team in a reality-based television program, mostly known as “Hard Knocks.”
HBO’s objective is to show NFL fans all over the world the memorable moments that take place during team OTAs, training camps, and meetings. It provides fans a better understanding of what every player and coach goes through as the season approaches.
This year, HBO has chosen the Miami Dolphins as the team that will embrace the camera. For a show that chronicles the dramatic events on a daily basis, HBO plans to take you for a ride in the minds of the Miami Dolphins’ franchise.
Now that you’ve heard the advertising portion of this piece, here’s a more realistic version. Nowadays, the world of television revolves around reality-TV. It’s simple, the more drama, the better.
Although, this is where the problem lies. For a television show to capture these riveting and dramatic events, a team must be worth watching. Ask any NFL fan out there which team they would prefer to watch, and the Dolphins would probably end up in the bottom in terms of votes. [Sorry Dolphins’ fans.]
Think about it. Is the camera crew really going to shoot the everyday struggle of Ryan Tannehill as a rookie? Will HBO provide fans with tape of veteran David Garrard and demoted quarterback, Matt Moore? That’s a must-watch. NOT!
With the exception of popular running back, Reggie Bush, there’s not one player or coach that could hold its end of the bargain. HBO might as well invite Dolphins’ minority owner and singer, Marc Anthony into the mix or even the Williams’ sisters. Serena Williams actually just lost in the first round at the French Open… that would be perfect. A little Serena wouldn’t hurt at all.
Bush better have something under his sleeve for this season because “Hard Knocks” is definitely depending on it.
Every other article you read, it will state that HBO selected Miami to be this year’s team. This post will tell you that HBO chose the Dolphins because the exciting teams weren’t interested. That’s the truth.
What do you think? Will you be watching this season’s “Hard Knocks?”

I’d rather watch the 1984 Dolphins when Dan Marino threw for 5,000 yards and 48 TDs than Hard Knocks with the 2012 Dolphins. Mark Duper and Mark Clayton would not be proud of this team right now.
I am with you man. HBO is going to have a difficult time trying to make this series entertaining for the fans. Like I said, don’t be surprised if Serena Williams makes a visit to Dolphins’ camp. That would be funny.
Oh this should really prove to be interesting. Bush complains he’s not getting enough balls passed or thrown to him because Ryan Tannehill can’t understand Philbin’s playbook. Why do I get the feeling it’s going to be more of the same from the Dolphins in terms of it being another lackluster season filled with some really bad performances? If they fail to have a winning record in 2012, then Jeff Ireland should be fired as the GM.
So “Lefty” Mickelson wants to follow in Magic Johnson’s footsteps and own an MLB team ? Why the Padres ? God damn ! There’s no accounting for either stupidity or a complete lack taste and intelligence ! LOL,LOL,LOL !!!
tophatal ………..
With the Dolphins choosing Ryan Tannehill as the 8th overall pick in this year’s draft, Miami GM Jeff Ireland better pray that the Dolphins have a mediocre season, otherwise you’re exactly right Alan, out he goes.
I have always felt NFL teams have enough on their plate trying to get ready for a season without having HBO follow them around… at which point they are distracted, playing for the cameras and otherwise not focused 100% on the task at hand. And quite frankly, some folks don’t come off looking too good even if they are trying to. It really is a high risk/low reward situation unless you think a potential free agent is watching a coaching staff behind the scenes and thinking he’d like to play for them next season. I just believe most of the NFL teams are waving off HBO on this venture now and the ownership of the Dolphins just figured being on this might sell a few more tickets.
Great insight Bruce. For a fan, HBO “Hard Knocks” is a great show being that it presents a different side of how teams prepare for the upcoming season. On a franchise level, you hit it right on the head. It’s all about exposure, something the Dolphins wouldn’t mind having this year.
I picture a lot of “facepalming” by the Dolph’s coaching staff when they realize what a mistake the Tannehill thing was…
There’s going to be a lot of people fired if this whole Ryan Tannehill project goes south. At least, we’ll all have a chance to see Tannehill’s hot, smoking wife once again. There’s no question she’ll be on the show.
Haven’t said “hi” in a while. Always like your articles on every sport. BTW, if HBO’s “Hard Knocks” wants a team to feature, they might find some useful footage in the Vikings camp.
Harvin and Peterson are missing some practices. Not trying to gossip, but just sayin’…
I agree Steven! The Vikings’ star players were indeed missing practices a few days back, but now both are believed to be participating at the Vikings’ OTAs. Nonetheless, the Vikings would have been a better option for HBO than the Dolphins. There’s no denying that. Thanks for reading. As always, your opinions are always welcome here.
I’ve always watched/enjoyed Hard Knocks and will watch it again this year. That said watching the Dolphins fails to excite me in anyway.
Hope you’ve been well while I’ve been away from the blogging world. cheers!
Hey Jed! Glad to hear from you. Hope everything is well. In terms of the Dolphins and Hard Knocks, just make sure you have a pillow and a blanket because don’t be surprised if you fall into deep sleep when watching the show.
