There’s a huge lesson to be learned here. Talk “smack” and the Olympic committee will make sure to make the situation its business.

The committee is adamant about instilling sportsmanship throughout the games and will not tolerate unaccepted behavior by any of the athletes in the London 2012 Olympics.

Michel Morganella, a 23-year-old Swiss football player learned this the hard way. After the Swiss had lost to South Korea with the score of 2-1 on Sunday, via Twitter, Morganella had released very harsh, racist remarks regarding the Koreans.

I want to beat up all South Koreans! Bunch of mentally handicapped retards! (“Je les tous Defonce Coréens, allez vous tous Bruler, bande de trisos!”)

Not exactly the type of words you would expect to hear from an Olympian representing a certain country. Due to the “tweet,” Michel Morganella had been expelled from the 2012 London Games.

Michel Morganella tried to apologize on Twitter, but to no avail. The young soccer player was still kicked out of the Olympics for his comments and his Twitter page [@morgastoss] had also been deleted.

You can bet your “gold medals” that athletes will be wearier from now on.

There should be a course on how to use Twitter! So many people have no idea how powerful the site is. He should be expelled!

    • CDR says:

Your right Jeremy. Twitter along with Facebook are such powerful tools now in social media. As an athlete, one must know his/her limitations. These social media sites have the power to bring a person up, but also has the same power to bring a person down. It’s the nature of the beast.

  2. J-Dub says:

I hate to be the guy to split hairs here, but where was the racist comment? “Mentally handicapped retards” is insensitive, and certainly in poor taste, but it isn’t racist.

    • CDR says:

A valid point. Well-taken JW. I think the racist remarks stemmed more from Morganella starting with “I want to beat up ALL South Koreans, they are just retards” etc. Certainly a great opinion, but I think it’s how you judge the comment that could either give it the vibe of being racist or not. Nonetheless, it was a very dumb decision.

    • Rochelle Bondieumaitre says:

Actually it is, because he’s calling them mentally handicapped. Plus he also called them retards. I’m pretty sure if someone said that 2 u, u would take it pretty hard….

    • CDR says:

Right, it’s really how you perceive the comment. It could be received as a racist remark or simply just pure disrespect. The worst part of it is that it wasn’t intended for just one person, it was to the whole country, which brought it to another level.

  3. Rochelle Bondieumaitre says:

Why would he say that just because he lost?! I mean hes supposed to be an OLYMPIAN! Supposed to be showing GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP! And he wants to call the South Koreans HANDICAPPED?! To me he looks more handicapped then the rest of them! He deserves to be kicked out the olympics!

    • CDR says:

Thanks for the comment Rochelle! You’re definitely right when you say that he’s supposed to be an Olympian. It’s not exactly the words you want coming from an athlete that represents your country. This was a perfect example of what not to do in the Olympics.
