This morning, famous sports athlete Lance Armstrong was ripped away from his accomplishments and banished from the sport of cycling forever.

The USADA [U.S. Anti-Doping Agency] through time had fought to try to prosecute Armstrong for alleged drug use during the cyclist’s dominance in Tour De France. After experiencing multiple grueling court battles with the USADA, Armstrong had finally chose to cut his losses and withdraw from fighting the allegation.

Armstrong’s decision to throw in the towel prompted the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s next move and that was to surprisingly strip the cyclist’s seven Tour De France titles from 1999-2005. Armstrong’s lawyers are currently trying to fight the punishment.

Regardless of your opinions on Lance Armstrong if you even care or not, he will always be remembered for his bravery and pure determination. No one in this world could ever take that away from him nor should anyone want to. After being diagnosed with testicular cancer, Armstrong managed to come back and dominate the sport of cycling like no one has ever seen.

Lance Armstrong to this day maintains his innocence, but could no longer withstand the agony of trying to fight the USADA.

“I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999. The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today — finished.” -ESPN

“If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA’s process, I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and — once and for all — put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance,” Armstrong said. “But I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair.” -Washington Post

With so much “cheating” in the world of sports today, do you believe that Lance Armstrong is innocent or guilty?

  1. Armstrong and his lawyers have been caught napping at the wheel. Why didn’t Armstrong sue Tyler Hamilton, his former teammate when the cyclist laid his soul bare? If you remember Hamilton having been subpoenaed gave the same testimony under oath in a grand jury hearing as he did to a Congressional Hearing.

So who is really kidding whom, here?

The ICU who govern the sport as its international governing body have been just as culpable in this mess as anyone else. ‘nough said!

Let me pose this question to you, if Armstrong is as innocent as he claim and he was so happy to sue anyone who questioned his credibility, then why didn’t he come and use his former teammate Tyler Hamilton? Remember Hamilton’s statement was in the form of a sworn affidavit and then under subpoena to a congressional hearing and to the FBI. Think about it. Disseminate all of the information and not the mere morsels on offer just by Armstrong or the USADA.

Armstrong, much like Tiger Woods and Roger Clemens have always sought the public’s empathy. Now he’s being found as being someone dubious. Nevermind the fact he’s used fame to build a charitable foundation with funds now exceeding $500 million (half a billion dollars ). How does that sit with you given that tidbit of information?

    Tophatal ……..

Any person should be considered innocent until proven guilty. We place Lance Armstrong in this same platform. You’re right Alan, what Tyler Hamilton did was shocking, but you’d be surprised at what people are willing to do in order to get the negative spotlight away from them. Don’t get us wrong, Armstrong could very well be guilty and just because a person passes a drug test, it doesn’t mean that same person is not taking drugs, we get all that. The fact that Armstrong didn’t sue Hamilton also was confusing and when Armstrong threw in the towel against the USADA, it made it even worse.

We’re going to stick to our guns and steer away from his charity and his cancer. That isn’t part of this situation and we’d like to keep it at that. To answer your question, we’re going to play the middle here even though the perception very much seems like Armstrong might have used drugs. The conclusion of it all is that no one has legitimate proof and because of this, we just can’t find it in ourselves to want to punish a guy that way.

If proof comes out that Armstrong did use drugs, we’d be the first to say… yes, strip the guy from all his accomplishments because it’s the right thing to do.

  2. I wrote about this over at the Chump just yesterday, CDR, and one of the points I bring up is that, for the longest time, and even with the latest news, Lancy seemed to get a pass while others did not.

Still not quite sure why that is, whether we just liked him more, or believed him whereas others we didn’t, but at this point, it is what it is: another athlete doing what he needed to do to get by.

We’ll be sure to go to the site and read what you have to say. Clearly, the arrows point to Lance Armstrong using PEDs, but as much as we would like to crucify the guy for doing so, no hard evidence has really been announced. We might be naive to the whole situation, but we would prefer to just see the proof first.

  3. Sadly, I almost don’t even care about Armstrong and drugging anymore… as it is the story that never ends. So I suppose that I understand if Lance was tired, but it seems strange that he would give up the second fight for his life.

    • CDR says:

There’s so many ways to think about this. Lance Armstrong could very well be guilty, but it’s hard to put that on paper simple because there’s no proof. Again, we’re one to justify someone’s innocence based on the evidence. Regardless of the fact, one of the most famous athletes in sports has just been erased from the history books. That’s saddening.
