Veteran cornerback Champ Bailey injures his left foot, wideout Wes Welker suffers an ankle sprain, and now it’s linebacker Von Miller being suspended for six games for marijuana use. The Denver Broncos just can’t catch a break at all.
The Broncos’ best player on the defensive side of the ball had been suspended for six games for violating the substance abuse policy. As a result, Miller will lose approximately 35% of his earnings this year, which amounts to exactly $806,161.76 out of what was supposed to be a $2,284,125 NFL 2013-14 salary.
“I will not make the same mistakes about adhering to the policy in the future,” Miller said via his NFLPA statement. “During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape. I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bringing a championship back to the people of Denver.”
Let’s hope Von Miller is telling the truth. The next time the linebacker fails to adhere to the substance guidelines, the punishment will be for one year.
Von Miller will return on Week 7. Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos need to hang on until then.
