When one of the best NFL coaches speaks, you always have to listen.

During a press conference, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked about the current importance of special teams in the NFL. Belichick responded by saying that the kicking aspect now takes a backseat in the game and don’t have as much importance anymore as it should.

“I personally would love to see the kicking game remain as a very integral part of the game so that the kickoffs are returned and so that extra points are not over 99 percent converted because that’s not what extra points were when they were initially put into the game back 80 years ago, whatever it was,” Belichick said.

“I would be in favor of not seeing it be an over 99 percent conversion rate,” Belichick said. “It’s virtually automatic. That’s just not the way the extra point was put into the game. It was an extra point that you actually had to execute and it was executed by players who were not specialists, they were position players. It was a lot harder for them to do. The Gino Cappellettis of the world and so forth and they were very good. It’s not like it is now where it’s well over 99 percent. I don’t think that’s really a very exciting play because it’s so automatic.”

Do you think the NFL should change the rules on kicking extra points?

You got to admit Alan, Bill does have a point when it comes to extra points. It’s not that exciting so if the league could somehow think of a way for teams to alternatively secure the point, that would most likely be better.

  1. That’s an interesting perspective.

Maybe moving it back would work?

    • CDR says:

That could work as well, but not sure if that’ll happen because then the “extra point” will start to enter field goal territory. There are two ways you could go about this. Either take away the extra point kick completely or teams could try a 2-point conversion after each touchdown. Nonetheless, we doubt the NFL views this situation as important so nothing will happen.
