Ravens Torrey Smith Criticized For Homophobic Remark

On Instagram, Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver had posted a picture of his brother wearing pink socks with flowers. The caption on the photo said, “Look at this queen.”

While Smith’s comment surely seemed “playful,” some fans and other websites are now targeting the Ravens’ receiver for apparently mentioning a gay slur.

Torrey Smith laughs at the idea and reiterates to the public that he respects the gay community. The Ravens’ wide receiver even went as far as to post on Twitter to prove his point and that his actions were simply nothing more than poking fun.

“Don’t do that (directed to websites criticizing Smith), I was joking with my brother and if you think I was leaning towards being offensive, you would know that I have been supportive of gay rights,” said Smith. “If you are looking for a story look somewhere else.”

In today’s sports, if any athlete were to publish comments regarding same-sex relationships or homosexuality, there seems to always be negative criticism that follows.

Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver Torrey Smith just happens to be the next victim.

What do you think? Is this an example of a homophobic remark or not?

If it’s really no big deal to him it shouldn’t be one to simply say if I offended anyone I apologize. Getting overly defensive about it helps escalate the non-issue this really is. Just take the high road and then let your actions going forward speak for you. No need to bow up and challenge the TMZ world we live in. Ain’t going to change that. Just chill and roll.

    • CDR says:

That’s probably the greatest advice you could tell Smith, but because of pride, things happen differently. Torrey Smith probably was joking and wants to prove to the public that he meant nothing by it so why take it down. It’s one of those 50/50 situations where each side has the potential to be the right move.

  2. Remember when Shaq called the Kings the Sacramento Kings?

How come more wasn’t made of that?

    • CDR says:

You know how it is, Chris? People just take things to a certain level when it shouldn’t even go that far. Personally, Smith was only joking. With that said, as a professional athlete, he should’ve just taken it down to avoid conflict.
