On Instagram, Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver had posted a picture of his brother wearing pink socks with flowers. The caption on the photo said, “Look at this queen.”
While Smith’s comment surely seemed “playful,” some fans and other websites are now targeting the Ravens’ receiver for apparently mentioning a gay slur.
The things these gossip sites do to get attention smh…I wasn't being offensive nor am I homophobic not apologizing or taking it down
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) January 3, 2014
Torrey Smith laughs at the idea and reiterates to the public that he respects the gay community. The Ravens’ wide receiver even went as far as to post on Twitter to prove his point and that his actions were simply nothing more than poking fun.
“Don’t do that (directed to websites criticizing Smith), I was joking with my brother and if you think I was leaning towards being offensive, you would know that I have been supportive of gay rights,” said Smith. “If you are looking for a story look somewhere else.”
In today’s sports, if any athlete were to publish comments regarding same-sex relationships or homosexuality, there seems to always be negative criticism that follows.
Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver Torrey Smith just happens to be the next victim.
What do you think? Is this an example of a homophobic remark or not?
